“As you go the way of life, you will come to a great chasm. Jump… It is not so far as you think.”
~ A bit of advice given to a young Native American at the time of his initiation;
I offer rites-of-passage workshops for teen and adult men in order to integrate the gifts and talents, responsibilities and courage that each of us holds as we move from one life stage to the next. The skill and courage needed to leave solid ground and jump into the great unknown of adolescence, manhood, marriage, and fatherhood requires faith, understanding, and guidance. These ceremonies are an initiation intended to honor and ritualize the death and rebirth necessary at the threshold of each of these life stages.
Initiation requires a separation from the tribe, the confronting of a genuine ordeal, and a return to the tribe forever changed. The enactment of ritual brings us to the threshold so that we may face our loneliness, and build deep intimacy and real community. A central purpose of ceremony is to separate from day to day living and identity, and prepare for the unknown; to be stripped down to the ground of our being, risking humiliation and failure in order that the deep Self be revealed.
The Invitation to Ceremony:
To have our hearts broken in order to learn to live with an open heart.
To find stillness and quiet inside of us.
To hear our soul calling and to have the courage to listen.
To embrace our fear so as to discover the depth of our courage.
To embrace our loneliness that we build deep intimacy and real community.
To confront our suffering and shortcoming that we grow more compassionate.
To lay bare our wounds and expose our shame so that we may know humility.
To reveal our truths so as to live in integrity.
To risk dying a beautiful death in order to live a meaningful life.
To lose our minds and come to our senses.
I need you with me on this journey.
